Trinity Alps Wilderness / Canyon Creek Lakes Backpacking Trek (3 nights)
SacramentoTrailMix.com
"The Canyon Creek Trail takes backpackers into the best of the Alps: sapphire-blue lakes, tumbling creeks, dramatic waterfalls, wildflowers, rugged granite peaks flanded by permanent snowfields, exquisite scenery, and splendid vistas are all here in abundance....few other mountain regions possess the wide range of diversity found in the Trinities." from Wilderness Press "This is the kind of place where wilderness lovers think they can find religion." - Foghorn Outdoors. The destination is Canyon Creek Lakes, set high in a mountain canyon, framed by Sawtoth Mointain to the east and a series of high granite rims to the north. Pierce Canyon Falls Guinda Capay Valley 6-8 miles moderate
SacramentoTrailMix.com
This minimally maintained county road closes in the winter allowing a right of way up into the canyon of the mountains of the Capay Valley. While the signs posted say private land, the road is a right of way and is a pretty hike with waterfalls as a goal. The county road ends at 4 miles but the falls lie at 3 miles and either could be a turnaround point if we want or go to the end of the road. Hopefully, with the recent rains, the falls will be flowing. Guinda is a 50 miles drive from Sacramento. We will meet up at 11th and P at 10 a.m. as the trip will take us about an hour. The hike should take about 3 hours. hike described an actual u-tube video at http://www.yolohiker.... Directions from 11th and P meetup place: I-5 North to Hwy 16 west (this will be in Woodland) and take 16 wEST all the way to Guinda. Make a left at Forrest Avenue (the general store across from the post office) and go down to the end where there is a broad green gate. We will park here, go over the gate, and up the right away for an out and back 6-8 miles.

California's LOST COAST- King Range Ntl Conservation Area - Backpacking (3 days)
SacramentoTrailMix.com
See California's Coast as it was 1,000 years ago! "A spectacular meeting of land and sea is certainly the dominant feature of King Range National Conservation Area (NCA). Mountains seem to thrust straight out of the surf; a precipitous rise rarely surpassed on the continental U.S. coastline. King Peak, the highest point at 4,088 feet, is only three miles from the ocean." "The King Range NCA covers 68,000 acres and extends along 35 miles of coastline between the mouth of the Mattole River and Sinkyone Wilderness State Park. Here the landscape was too rugged for highway building, forcing State Highway 1 and U.S. 101 inland. The remote region is known as California's Lost Coast, and is only accessed by a few back roads." Difficulty: 2 out of 5 (from Foghorn Outdoors) Scenery: 9 out of 10 (from Foghorn Outdoors) Distance: 25.0 miles Dogs: Welcomed, but must have protective booties (sand/rocks are extremely sharp and abrasive along this part of the coast) More Details Coming!

Table Mountain Hike, Cherokee Museum, & North Sierra Foothills History
SacramentoTrailMix.com
"INTERMEDIATE" HIKE!!! Fun trip to North Table Mountain near Oroville for excellent afternoon/evening views of the sunset over the Sacramento Valley, Sutter Buttes, and surrounding hills. Wildflowers should be available. Water falls cascade over the western edge of the mountain. The old town of Cherokee is nearby with a museum and several remains of a once thriving gold mining development. An old Western Pacific caboose is also displayed there. There is a really cool covered bridge near the town of Oregon City. Go to Wikipedia for some good information on these and other adjacent sites. We'll carpool from the Sunsplash in Roseville and drive to Oroville and begin our hiking extravaganza. BRING THIS STUFF: hiking boots with good tread plenty of water + attitude sunscreen & hat flashlight camera snacks money for dinner on the way home extra socks extra water walking shoes/sandals THINGS TO CONSIDER: full exposure area (no shade) narrow trails along steep drop walking on sharp rocks walking through mud crossing small streams cows steep hills enjoying it all This is an excellent hike. I've been there a few times. Some parts of the journey are easy, some are more strenuous. There are no designated trails. Table Mountain is not as flat as it looks. Elevation variance is +/- 200 feet. Terrain is volcanic rock with large areas of meadow grass. Several streams run through, so be prepared to get wet feet. We will climb into some ravines. Area reminds me of a California Milk commercial. DIRECTIONS: http://maps.google.co... Please join us for dinner after at Western Pacific Brewing & Dining in Oroville. Call Aaron @ 916-203-1308 Good times!

Lakes, Waterfalls, Marsh Loop Mt. Tamalpais - Strenuous
SacramentoTrailMix.com
Weather looks spectacular for hiking Saturday! Mostly sunny in the area with temps from about 51-58 depending on elevation. Friday rain should bring nice flows to Cataract Falls. Some spots could be slippery so I recommend boots with good tread. See you all at parking lot - Steve Contact: Steve G cell: 530-383-3470 EVEN NEWER REMARKS: Im not a particularly fast hiker, so if you like to go quickly ahead of the group, make sure to print out and bring the trail map/s. There are many trails and trail intersections in this area and it is easy to get sidetracked or lost. I would like everyone to wait up at the lunch spot to make sure we are all together at this point. ADDITIONAL NEWER REMARKS: The lunch spot is a very beautiful location for a break but it is a grassy hillside and could be damp, so bring something like a small tarp, etc., to sit on. Although dogs are allowed on leash I dont recommend it as we will be hiking mostly on narrow trails. There is not usually much poison oak on the north side of Mt. Tam, but there may be some so be on the lookout. NEW REMARKS: I've added the "strenuous" designation to this hike to be more in keeping with the ratings on similar hikes currently being offered. I placed a limit on number of participants due to parking availability at the trailhead. If you are not planning on attending, please update your RSVP. Please note: This hike has some very steep sections, both up and down, including many stairs along way. Not recommended for beginners or young children. Duration: about 6-7 hours with lunch and breaks to enjoy views (plus about 4 hours round-trip driving time) Distance: about 10 miles Overall elevation gain: about 2400 ft. Difficulty: Intermediate to advanced This loop hike will take us past two lakes, a series of waterfalls, and a secluded marsh. Along the way we will pass through redwood and fir forests, chaparral covered slopes and grassy ridge tops. There will be a steep climb along the Cataract Trail, lots of up-and-downs along the way and a possible tricky stream crossing depending on recent rains. The hike is on Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD) land. Please respect their regulations. Dogs are allowed only on leash. No swimming or pets are allowed in the lakes, as this is drinking water for Marin County. Bring a snack to eat before lunch. It's about 5.5 miles to the lunch spot and worth the hike! From the parking area cross the earthen dam of Bon Tempe Lake (sign should point toward shadyside) and veer on the fire road toward the right. At the next junction take the fire road to the right until you reach the Kent trail and follow it along the shores of Alpine Lake. Follow the Kent trail for 2 miles. Next take the Helen Markt trail to the right and follow it for 1.7 miles. At the junction with the Cataract Trail, turn right and cross the bridge. We will follow the trail downhill for about a quarter mile for extra waterfall viewing, then turn around and head uphill. At the second wide viewing spot in the trail with a wood railing, stop, take in the view for a break, then turn around and head back toward the bridge. After re-crossing the bridge, stay right on the Cataract Trail and follow it uphill for .8 mile. It is steep, and may be slippery if wet, and has many stairs along the way. If there has been recent rain there will be unfolding views of the creek as it spills over rocks and into pools all through Cataract Canyon. At the junction with the High Marsh Trail, make a hairpin left turn to follow High Marsh. The sign for High Marsh may be facing the other direction, so make sure you dont miss it. At a short distance along the High Marsh, the trail traverses a steep grassy hillside. As the trail rounds the bend on the edge of the ridge, a fire road climbs steeply to the right. Follow this road up the hill a short distance for a spectacular view of the Bolinas Ridge and the hills to the north of Mt. Tam. We will have lunch here. (Note: We do not go to Laurel Dell Camp. If, after hiking up the Cataract Trail, you find yourself at a picnic ground with tables, you have gone too far. Turn back down the Cataract Trail and in about a quarter mile you will find the intersection with High Marsh.) After lunch, return to the High Marsh Trail and follow it for the remaining 2 miles. Shortly after passing the marsh, we come to the junction with the Kent Trail. Turn left on Kent trail for .6 mile to the junction with the Stocking Trail. Turn right on the Stocking Trail (the sign post says "To Rocky Ridge" on the front, and "Stocking Trail" on the back) and follow it for .6 mile. At the junction with the Rocky Ridge Road, turn right and follow this rough fire road for the final 1.4 miles to our starting point at Bon Tempe Lake. Weather that will cancel: heavy rain Trail map: http://files.meetup.c... I recommend also bringing MMWD map for overview of area: http://www.marinwater... SacramentoTrailMix.com
WE SHOULD HAVE FRESH SNOW FOR SATURDAY...YEAH!! UPDATE Fri: Weather prediction for Sat. looks great...so it's a GO for trekking the snow! Don't forget to bring: water / wind breaker / lunch / snacks / extra socks / and of course snowshoes, poles and gaiters. DRESS IN LAYERS...snowshoeing is an aerobic acitivity and you will be burning mega calories! WARNING: There should be fresh snow up the hill...this may no longer be suitable for toy-size dogs, especially if they're white : ) If we have to break trail, we will take turns being the leader. No one person will have to do all the work. REMINDER: "Watch out where the huskies go...and don't you eat that yellow snow!" This hike is suitable for ALL SNOWSHOEING ABILITIES, as long as you're reasonably fit. I plan on hiking for 3 to 5 hrs., depending on weather and snow conditions, But, you can choose to do a shorter hike by turning around at any point. It's almost impossible to get lost. "This little known route to the summit of Little Round Top provides nearly continuous, awe-inspiring views. Beyond the first mile, the trail follows the exposed ridge above the treeline for another four miles, where snowshoers are continuously treated to some of the most fantastic scenery in the greater Tahoe Sierra region. Even if you are unable to complete to trek to LRT, you can turn back at any point, satisfied with the extraordinary scenery. After hiking the ridge, we will drop back down to the Upper Truckee River valley, and then hike up the valley to Meiss Lake. "The nearly level gradient of the large basin provides easy snowshoeing as you follow the general course of the frozen river through widely scattered evergreens." Distance/Elevation Gain/Difficulty: as this is an out-an-back hike, snowshoers can turn around at any time. Elev. at trailhead is 8650 ft. Elev. at ridge to Little Round Top is approx.9200 ft, a gain of about 550 ft. Elev. at Meiss Lake is 8320 ft., a loss of 330 ft. The first mile is a gradual climb to the saddle at 8760 ft, a gain of ~110 ft. Like any other snowshoeing trek, its difficulty depends on a number of factors, including snow condition, trail condition, weather, elevation, and your own personal physical condition. The round trip to Meiss Lake is a relatively easy 7 mi., with minimal climbing involved (just the first mile), and is suitable for beginners. The hike up to the ridge takes a little more energy but only requires about another 400 ft in elev. gain from the saddle to the ridge. The round trip to Little Round Top is 10 mi. We may not have the time to hike all the way to LRT, in order to also get to Meiss Lake. But the views the trail along the ridge offers are 360 degrees of panoramic beauty unparalleled in the region. You may never want to come down! But, the weather may force us down...make sure to bring wind-protection gear. Trailhead: trailhead is at the Meiss Meadow Sno Park is on the north side of highway 88, 0.2 mi. west of Carson Pass, approx. 5.3 mi. past Kirkwood Ski resort. A $5 Sno Park parking pass is required for all cars and can be obtained at REI and other locations. Meet at the trailhead by 10:00 am and we'll hit the trail by 10:15 am. Direction to Trailhead: Take highway #16 (Jackson Highway) east for about 18 mi. from Sunrise Blvd. Turn Right at the intersection of Highway 49, taking you South towards Jackson and Sutter Creek. (drive approximately 6.8 mi). Before you get to Jackson, turn Left onto Ridge Road. (drive approximately 8.3 mi) (Note: if you get to Jackson and miss Ridge Road, don't worry - you can turn directly onto Highway 88 East Bound in the town of Jackson just past the historic Main Street district.) Turn Left onto Highway 88 East (drive approximately 54 mi). Carpooling: Meet at the above Park N Ride by 7:30am. We will be Leaving No Later Than 7:45am. Snowshoes can be rented at REI. Dogs welcomed. A Snowshoeing Checklist has been posted in the 'Files'. Please pick and choose what to bring, but keep in mind that the trek along the ridge to Little Round Top can be quite windy. So, a good wind-breaker is recommended. Only Road Closure Cancels...
