SUNDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2010 The unforgiving Sierra Nevada winter of 1846-47 started early, setting the stage for what was to become an incredibly agonizing story of human desperation and determination. In April of 1846 the Donner Party set out to reach California. A series of errors, mishaps and tragedy followed in their footsteps. Reaching the base of the Sierra just as an early winter storm set in, their fate was sealed, forcing them to stay the winter. Split into two camps, one at the base of what is now Donner Lake and the other at Alder Creek. The emigrants faced perils unknown to our generation. Relief finally came in March with few of the original party surviving. Sunday's walking tour and interpretive session at the Donner Camp Picnic Area at Alder Creek, explores the Donner encampment at this site. Donner Camps-Sunday Walking Tours SU Easy, Walking Tour Walking tours begin promptly at 9:00 am. The day begins with an interpretive walk where you will hear of the grueling travel and mishaps of the Donner Party and the archaeological finds at this location. Participants will then drive (about 8 miles) to Donner Memorial State Park to view the Murphy Cabin Site and Pioneer Monument. Participants are welcome to view the movie documentary and explore the Emigrant Trail Museum at the State Park (12593 Donner Pass Road). Admission to the park is included for the remainder of the afternoon. Registration is from 8:30-9:00 am at the Donner Camp Picnic Area, located on Highway 89 North. $15 includes Sunday interpretive walks, entrance to Emigrant Trail Museum and day use at Donner Memorial State Park. Fall Colors - Big Meadow to Dardanelle's Lake
Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group
Bring with you on the trail these directions, the trail map on the right of this paragraph ================> by clicking on the map. It will open in a separate window and then you can drag and drop the picture to onto your desktop and and print it using your pre-viewer software. The trail map has been converted to a JPG file. If you try to just drag and drop the picture without clicking it first, it will open as only thumb nail picture (too small) Please stay with your car group. That way the chances of anyone getting lost will be reduced greatly. Also, if you are not sure which way to go while on the trail, then stop AT ALL FORKS IN THE ROAD and stick with me and my group (even if you want to go faster) and we will figure out the way to the lake. DON'T FORGET YOUR TRAIL MAP Elevation Gain and length: Starting at 7,321 at the trailhead to 8,179, down to 7,671 and up again to 7,764 at the lake. 7 miles round trip. Difficulty: This is a moderate hike (rating 2.9 out of 5) but I hike at an easy pace and like to stop to take photos or just to take in the scenery. Please note that rain will cancel this hike. Bring with you: The trail map (see above), these directions, Hat, Sturdy Waterproof Boots (we may be crossing streams) Jacket and layered clothing for changeable weather (it is October after all), Water (2 liters recommended), Sun Protection, Lunch, Map & Compass, Whistle, Flashlight, First Aid Kit (w/Moleskin), Pocket Knife, money for drivers (For carpoolers, I suggest $3.50 per each hour driving time (Driving time is about 3.5 to 4 hours round trip).) and optional dinner. Directions and summary are adapted from 100 Classic Hikes in Northern California: From the Iron Point (Folsom Park and Ride) take 50 east to Lake Tahoe. Shortly after the drive down to Tahoe Basin there will be junction of highways 50 and 89. Drive south (turn Right) on 89 for 5.2 miles to the signed Big Meadow trailhead. Go 150 yards farther and park in the lot on the left. Walk down to the trailhead. From the trailhead, we will start climbing past Jeffrey pine (and stop to smell them) ponderosa pine, and red and white fir. After about 0.4 mile quaking aspen and Lodgepole pine will flank a gate. Go RIGHT 75 yards farther at a signpost and promptly enter Big Meadow. Cross a wooden bridge and follow the path 0.4 miles through the middle of the green expanse. Resume gentle climbing at 0.8 mile through an open, dry forest where we may see blue lupine, orange Indian paintbrush and aster. At 1.6 miles the climb steepens as we will notice a slender meadow to the right, covered with corn lily, meadow goldenrod, aster and yarrow. The trail junction to Round Lake will be at two miles. Bear RIGHT at the junction, and walk 0.1 mile to a flat. 50 yards farther carefully travel up the unsigned, scant trail to the LEFT, which takes us to a stream 20 yards away. Cross the book, then stroll along the now obvious trail past sage and aspen to cross a bigger creek. The trail gradually drops until you cross Round Lakes outlet (the lake to the south of Dardanelles) and climbs again and down again to the eastern lakeshore of Dardanelles lake. See You All There! Meet in the dirt state park parking lot on the north side of the intersection of Green Valley Rd and Sophia Pkwy (by the east end of the Green Valley Rd Dam) at 7:00am - SEE MAP/LOCATION ABOVE. If you don't have a state park parking pass, you can legally park on the wide shoulders of Sophia Pkwy just south of Green Valley Rd and walk across Green Valley to the parking lot (less than a 1/4 mile walk). We'll begin the hike NLT 7:15am - or sooner if all "Yes" RSVPer's have arrived. We'll hike from the east end of the dam along singletrack trail to the Brown's Ravine Marina (about 45-minutes), then turn around. The dog group will take the lake shore back, letting the dogs have a little fun! Those wanting to hike further can pick up the trail on the other side of the marina and continue east as long as they want before turning around. Those not wanting to hang with the dogs can take the trail back to the starting point. This is an easy hike with a few short hills thrown in for good measure. The trail is fairly wide in most areas with little poison oak and skirts Folsom Lake. The hike should take about 2-hours. Call me if you get lost or are running late. Bryan (916) 220-7546

Dixon Corn Maze
Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group
The largest corn maze in the world! GET YOUR ORANGE ON!!! For the little ones: Corn seed bath (free) Hay bale mountain (free) African grass maze (free) Pumpkin farm Wagon rides ($3) Pedal carts ($5) Be sure to pick up your maze map and bring your reading glasses and compass. Wear sturdy shoes. The ground in the corn rows is very uneven. The time it takes varies, but I would estimate about 2 hours to get through the maze and another hour to check out the other stuff. Come on, you're in a corn maze, does it really matter?! Even though Dixon is reasonably close, we'll still offer a carpool from REI in Sacramento. If you plan on driving yourself, please meet us at the pay station at 230pm. Find me there in my festive Halloween garb. There's good food to be purchased at the farm, however we may choose to gather afterwards somewhere for a nice dinner. Dressing in festive Halloween attire is encouraged and strongly recommended. Korn music allowed. Children of the corn not allowed. Corn cobb pipes definitely not allowed. "Jimmy crack corn" may not care, but I do. No dogs please.
