Lakes, Waterfalls, Marsh Loop – Mt. Tamalpais - Strenuous

Wed, 2010-03-10 22:16

SacramentoTrailMix.com

Contact: Steve G cell: 530-383-3470 EVEN NEWER REMARKS: I’m not a particularly fast hiker, so if you like to go quickly ahead of the group, make sure to print out and bring the trail map/s. There are many trails and trail intersections in this area and it is easy to get sidetracked or lost. I would like everyone to wait up at the lunch spot to make sure we are all together at this point. ADDITIONAL NEWER REMARKS: The lunch spot is a very beautiful location for a break but it is a grassy hillside and could be damp, so bring something like a small tarp, etc., to sit on. Although dogs are allowed on leash I don’t recommend it as we will be hiking mostly on narrow trails. There is not usually much poison oak on the north side of Mt. Tam, but there may be some so be on the lookout. NEW REMARKS: I've added the "strenuous" designation to this hike to be more in keeping with the ratings on similar hikes currently being offered. I placed a limit on number of participants due to parking availability at the trailhead. If you are not planning on attending, please update your RSVP. Please note: This hike has some very steep sections, both up and down, including many stairs along way. Not recommended for beginners or young children. Duration: about 6-7 hours with lunch and breaks to enjoy views (plus about 4 hours round-trip driving time) Distance: about 10 miles Overall elevation gain: about 2400 ft. Difficulty: Intermediate to advanced This loop hike will take us past two lakes, a series of waterfalls, and a secluded marsh. Along the way we will pass through redwood and fir forests, chaparral covered slopes and grassy ridge tops. There will be a steep climb along the Cataract Trail, lots of up-and-downs along the way and a possible tricky stream crossing depending on recent rains. The hike is on Marin Municipal Water District (MMWD) land. Please respect their regulations. Dogs are allowed only on leash. No swimming or pets are allowed in the lakes, as this is drinking water for Marin County. Bring a snack to eat before lunch. It's about 5.5 miles to the lunch spot and worth the hike! From the parking area cross the earthen dam of Bon Tempe Lake (sign should point toward “shadyside”) and veer on the fire road toward the right. At the next junction take the fire road to the right until you reach the Kent trail and follow it along the shores of Alpine Lake. Follow the Kent trail for 2 miles. Next take the Helen Markt trail to the right and follow it for 1.7 miles. At the junction with the Cataract Trail, turn right and cross the bridge. We will follow the trail downhill for about a quarter mile for extra waterfall viewing, then turn around and head uphill. At the second wide viewing spot in the trail with a wood railing, stop, take in the view for a break, then turn around and head back toward the bridge. After re-crossing the bridge, stay right on the Cataract Trail and follow it uphill for .8 mile. It is steep, and may be slippery if wet, and has many stairs along the way. If there has been recent rain there will be unfolding views of the creek as it spills over rocks and into pools all through Cataract Canyon. At the junction with the High Marsh Trail, make a hairpin left turn to follow High Marsh. The sign for High Marsh may be facing the other direction, so make sure you don’t miss it. At a short distance along the High Marsh, the trail traverses a steep grassy hillside. As the trail rounds the bend on the edge of the ridge, a fire road climbs steeply to the right. Follow this road up the hill a short distance for a spectacular view of the Bolinas Ridge and the hills to the north of Mt. Tam. We will have lunch here. (Note: We do not go to Laurel Dell Camp. If, after hiking up the Cataract Trail, you find yourself at a picnic ground with tables, you have gone too far. Turn back down the Cataract Trail and in about a quarter mile you will find the intersection with High Marsh.) After lunch, return to the High Marsh Trail and follow it for the remaining 2 miles. Shortly after passing the marsh, we come to the junction with the Kent Trail. Turn left on Kent trail for .6 mile to the junction with the Stocking Trail. Turn right on the Stocking Trail (the sign post says "To Rocky Ridge" on the front, and "Stocking Trail" on the back) and follow it for .6 mile. At the junction with the Rocky Ridge Road, turn right and follow this rough fire road for the final 1.4 miles to our starting point at Bon Tempe Lake. Weather that will cancel: heavy rain Trail map: http://files.meetup.c... I recommend also bringing MMWD map for overview of area: http://www.marinwater... Local roads to parking area: http://files.meetup.c... Driving directions on MMWD site: http://www.marinwater... Snowshoe to Little Round Top & Meiss Lake - REDUX

Wed, 2010-03-10 21:49

SacramentoTrailMix.com

This hike is suitable for ALL SNOWSHOEING ABILITIES, as long as you're reasonably fit. I plan on hiking for 3 to 5 hrs., depending on weather and snow conditions, But, you can choose to do a shorter hike by turning around at any point. It's almost impossible to get lost. "This little known route to the summit of Little Round Top provides nearly continuous, awe-inspiring views. Beyond the first mile, the trail follows the exposed ridge above the treeline for another four miles, where snowshoers are continuously treated to some of the most fantastic scenery in the greater Tahoe Sierra region. Even if you are unable to complete to trek to LRT, you can turn back at any point, satisfied with the extraordinary scenery. After hiking the ridge, we will drop back down to the Upper Truckee River valley, and then hike up the valley to Meiss Lake. "The nearly level gradient of the large basin provides easy snowshoeing as you follow the general course of the frozen river through widely scattered evergreens." Distance/Elevation Gain/Difficulty: as this is an out-an-back hike, snowshoers can turn around at any time. Elev. at trailhead is 8650 ft. Elev. at ridge to Little Round Top is approx.9200 ft, a gain of about 550 ft. Elev. at Meiss Lake is 8320 ft., a loss of 330 ft. The first mile is a gradual climb to the saddle at 8760 ft, a gain of ~110 ft. Like any other snowshoeing trek, its difficulty depends on a number of factors, including snow condition, trail condition, weather, elevation, and your own personal physical condition. The round trip to Meiss Lake is a relatively easy 7 mi., with minimal climbing involved (just the first mile), and is suitable for beginners. The hike up to the ridge takes a little more energy but only requires about another 400 ft in elev. gain from the saddle to the ridge. The round trip to Little Round Top is 10 mi. We may not have the time to hike all the way to LRT, in order to also get to Meiss Lake. But the views the trail along the ridge offers are 360 degrees of panoramic beauty unparalleled in the region. You may never want to come down! But, the weather may force us down...make sure to bring wind-protection gear. Trailhead: trailhead is at the Meiss Meadow Sno Park is on the north side of highway 88, 0.2 mi. west of Carson Pass, approx. 5.3 mi. past Kirkwood Ski resort. A $5 Sno Park parking pass is required for all cars and can be obtained at REI and other locations. Meet at the trailhead by 10:00 am and we'll hit the trail by 10:15 am. Direction to Trailhead: Take highway #16 (Jackson Highway) east for about 18 mi. from Sunrise Blvd. Turn Right at the intersection of Highway 49, taking you South towards Jackson and Sutter Creek. (drive approximately 6.8 mi). Before you get to Jackson, turn Left onto Ridge Road. (drive approximately 8.3 mi) (Note: if you get to Jackson and miss Ridge Road, don't worry - you can turn directly onto Highway 88 East Bound in the town of Jackson just past the historic Main Street district.) Turn Left onto Highway 88 East (drive approximately 54 mi). Carpooling: Meet at the above Park N Ride by 7:30am. We will be Leaving No Later Than 7:45am. Snowshoes can be rented at REI. Dogs welcomed. A Snowshoeing Checklist has been posted in the 'Files'. Please pick and choose what to bring, but keep in mind that the trek along the ridge to Little Round Top can be quite windy. So, a good wind-breaker is recommended. Only Road Closure Cancels...

SacramentoTrailMix.com

Borges Ranch - access to Shell Ridge / Diablo Foothills / Castle Rock - The Grand Tour Greg Brian from Oakland Dog Hikers has offered to show a small STM group another cool east bay hike. Dog friendly. He says, "I'm celebrating the coming of spring by hiking with Coco in one of my favorite local parks - Shell Ridge Open Space in Walnut Creek. Won't you join me? Let's meet up at Borges Ranch Bob Pond parking lot in Walnut Creek, and do an expedition through the Shell Ridge / Diablo Foothills / Castle Rock Parks. I've led several hikes in this area before. But this is a new, improved loop that includes all the topographic diversity that these wonderful parks offer . We'll follow a loop that takes us up the Ridge Trail, over part of the Twin Ponds Trail, down a canyon to the majestic Castle Rocks, and then back to the parking lot via the steep and scenic Shell Ridge Loop Trail. We'll break at a picnic area with grand views of Castle Rocks. We should also experience a wonderful display of spring wildflowers on the green hillsides. And THERE ARE NO PARKING OR DOG FEES FOR BORGES RANCH! The loop hike will be about 5.5 to 6 miles in length, and you should plan on at least 3 hours to complete it. It will be a moderately strenuous hike, relative to Bay Area standards, as we'll climb and descend two high ridges." PARK WEBSITE: http://www.walnut-cre... PARK TRAIL MAP: http://mappery.com/fu... REMEMBER, if you can't attend the hike, please change your RSVP to "no" so that others may have the chance. NO-SHOWS ARE NOT COOL! DIRECTIONS: Take I-80 W to I-680 S. Migrating Bald Eagles at Cache Creek Canyon

Mon, 2010-03-08 17:12

SacramentoTrailMix.com

This area and the surrounding hills are known for bald eagles as they migrate to their natural habitat. There's plenty of catfish and carp for these wintering birds which is the reason they keep coming back. We repeated this hike two times last year and were treated to some awesome views of them flying majestically. Some saw a couple perched on the trees. Should the eagles not be available, the surrounding scenery and the hike itself are well worth it. The trails are maintained with elevation gains of about 650' with gradual moderate ups and downs. We will hike a total of 4miles. We'll have lunch on a meadow that overlooks the canyon. Wear the usual hiking gear with some layers. Don't forget at least two quarts of water, lunch, and money for your driver, about $10. PLEASE NOTE: No Dogs. Rain cancels. TRAILHEAD DIRECTIONS: From Sac take I-5 north to Williams Exit Hwy 20 west toward Clearlake After 30 miles, you'll come to a bridge with a large sign on your left that says Cache Creek Management Area(Red Bud Trail). Enter here and the trailhead and restrooms are up ahead. Please be advised that there are no gas stations within 43 miles of the trailhead. Trail map: http://www.blm.gov/pg... Mon, 2010-03-08 11:40

SacramentoTrailMix.com

Let's celebrate the Vernal Equinox with an Evening hike through the woods and across the river and around the pond! This version will have both an easier and more difficult option, since my fearless co-leader, Susan, has volunteered to lead the more intermediate/advanced hikers on a faster paced and possibly longer version of this hike, while I will lead a slower paced version. Thanks Susan! Contact: Karl Phone: 916 747-4476 Distance: 6 to 7 miles (less for less experience option). Duration: ~ 2.5 hours Difficulty: Beginner and intermediate/advanced options Bring a flashlight or headlamp. Starting at Hagan Community Park, we will follow a figure 8 loop trail that traverses the River Bend (formerly Goethe) Park woods along the river, crosses the river to American River Park in Fair Oaks where it will do a loop by the pond and then return across the bridge then through an alternate route back to the starting point. We will meet inside Hagan Community Park. I called the HQ and was told that the gates are not closed until nearly 10PM, so we are fine since we should be returning at the latest by 8:30PM. Entrance into Hagan Park is $4 until 5:30, so try to arrive closer to the hike start time to avoid paying an entrance fee. Pierce Canyon Falls Guinda Capay Valley 6-8 miles moderate

Sun, 2010-03-07 22:40

SacramentoTrailMix.com

This minimally maintained county road closes in the winter allowing a right of way up into the canyon of the mountains of the Capay Valley. While the signs posted say private land, the road is a right of way and is a pretty hike with waterfalls as a goal. The county road ends at 4 miles but the falls lie at 3 miles and either could be a turnaround point if we want or go to the end of the road. HOPEFULLY WITH ALL THIS RECENT RAIN THE FALLS ARE FLOWING! Guinda is a 50 miles drive from Sacramento. We will meet up at 11th and P at 9 a.m. as the trip will take us about an hour. The hike should take about 3 hours. hike described an actual u-tube video at http://www.yolohiker.... Directions from 11th and P meetup place: I-5 North to Hwy 16 west (this will be in Woodland) and take 16 wEST all the way to Guinda. Make a left at Forrest Avenue (the general store across from the post office) and go down to the end where there is a broad green gate. We will park here, go over the gate, and up the right away for an out and back 6-8 miles.

Letts Lake/Snow Mountain Campout/Hike (2 nights/3 days)

Sun, 2010-03-07 08:08

SacramentoTrailMix.com

Letts Lake Trip Description This will be the second annual Letts Lake/Snow Mountain pre Memorial Day campout/hike (try saying that five times with a mouth full of beef jerky). We will depart on Friday afternoon May 21 and return on Sunday May 23. For ambitious folks, the trip will feature a climb of Snow Mountain on Saturday. Or you can just hang around this wonderful campsite to fish, swim, sleep or whatever. For mountain bikers, there are plenty of gravel roads to explore. Letts Lake Campground is located 16 miles west of Stonyford in the Mendocino National Forest at an elevation of 4,500 feet. The main feature is a 35 acre lake for non-motorized boating, fishing and swimming. There are 44 campsites located in a mixed conifer stand. The camp grounds have toilets, fire rings and water system. There is a $12/camsite/night fee. We will collect people's contributions when we get to the lake. There is no set “agenda” for this trip other than to go and enjoy a remote part of California that most people never see. I will lead a hike to the summit of Snow Mountain on Saturday for those who want to join me. Snow Mountain is 7,000+ feet high (one of the few coast range peaks to reliably get snow in the winter) and features great vistas, wildflowers and a variety of wildlife. The hike will use the Summit Springs Trail. This hike is about 8 miles round-trip with approximately 2,000 in elevation gain (see http://www.summitpost.... ) Last year the trip took us about 5 or 6 hours). There is the more ambitious Deafy Glade Trail: (http://www.summitpost.... ) for anyone who wants to try it. Deafy Glade is about 14 miles with around 4,000 feet in elevation gain. It also involves crossing Stony Creek which can run high and fast in late May. Pictures from Letts Lake and Snow Mountain are at: http://kevingong.com/.... I am not planning to organize communal meals but I encourage people who sign up to contact each other and make plans if they choose to do so. The drive to Letts Lake takes about 3 hours from Sacramento. The roads are good although the last 3 miles or so is on gravel. Last year people driving conventional vehicles had no trouble getting to the campsite. The drive from Letts Lake to the Summit Springs Trail head is also on gravel and is generally ok if a bit slow. We drove it in convention cars also but trucks or SUVs would have been better. DIRECTIONS TO LETTS LAKE The Meetup will be at the Mace Boulevard Park and Ride Lot on Interstate 80 in Davis at 2:00 pm Friday May 21. From there drive west on I-80 about 5 miles to Highway 113 (Woodland) and drive north to Interstate 5. At Woodland join I-5 north and drive to the town of Maxwell (about 48 miles). Exit at Maxwell Road (exit 586). Turn LEFT (west) onto Maxwell Road. Set your trip odometer to 0 here. Mile 9: Turn RIGHT at the “T” onto the Sites-Lodoga Rd. Mile 23: Turn right onto the Lodoga-Stonyford Rd Mile 31: You will reach the (very small) town of Stonyford. Turn LEFT at the 4-way intersection onto Market Street/Ladoga Stonyford Road. Note Stonyford is your LAST CHANCE FOR GAS. Mile 31.1: In about 300 yards turn LEFT onto Fouts Springs Rd (later to be known as county road M10). From this point on the land begins to rise. You will go over a ridge and drop down into Fouts Springs which contains a staging area for Off Highway Vehicle (dirt-bikes etc) enthusiasts and a ranch for troubled boys. While the road is paved it is less than 2 lanes wide and contains a NUMBER OF POTHOLES. They should not present a problem if you are watching and driving slow enough to avoid them. Mile 43.6: The road surface switches from pavement to a good gravel/dirt road at the Deafy Glade trail head. Mile 46 (approx): Turn LEFT to Letts Lake (the intersection should be signed and comes just after a warning to watch for dirt bikes crossing the road). You will drive about 1 mile on good dirt road. As you drive this last mile, you will see two roads exiting to the left (the map shows three but I remember two). In any case, go RIGHT at each of these intersections." The Letts Lake campground will be on your right. DIRECTIONS TO SUMMIT SPRING TRAIL HEAD At the Letts Lake turn off take the RIGHT fork in the road. Drive 6.5 miles to a RIGHT at a sign pointing towards Bear Creek and Summit Spring Take a RIGHT after 2 mi onto road 24N02 where a sign indicates Summit Spring After 1.8 miles, you will reach a four-way junction. Go STRAIGHT here. After another 1.7 mi up steep road 17N06, you will reach the Summit Spring trailhead
