Let's Go For a Bike Ride!
Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group
Let's meet at the north end of the parking lot at the Sacramento Marina at Miller Park and ride the trail from there down along the river as far as it goes or as far as we want or whatever, but let's go for a bike ride! I've only ridden this trail from Sutterville Road back to the park once some time ago, and I don't know where it goes downstream from there, so let's go check it out. If it's not far enough we can take a detour to William Land Park on the way back, or maybe we'll discover somewhere more fun to explore. Get there as early as you like, but let's hit the trail at 9:00. I expect we'll cover a few to quite a few miles at a relaxed pace, and about the same coming back. It'll be an easy ride. Casual. Make sure your bike's ready, and be prepared for little surprises like flat tires and such. I can assist some, but my area of expertise is mostly supervisory. And wear a helmet. You've got to wear a helmet.

OVERNIGHT BACKPACK to Island Lake, Desolation Wilderness (one night only)
Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group
Let's enjoy a leisurely stroll to pristine Island Lake, surrounded by the stark granite formations of the Desolation Wilderness. I will lead at a fairly mellow pace, and therefore rate this backpack as easy to moderate, with a one way distance of 4.25 miles and a vertical gain of 1200 ft. We will have plenty of time to lounge and/or explore after we arrive at our campsites. Those interested can bring an appetizer or desert item to share with the dinner meal. **This is a non-smoking event** I have never organized an overnight backpack, so I am going to borrow a few rules from "Laura in the Woods", who also organizes for Sacramento Backpackers Meetup: 1. Each participant should be prepared. Please assess your overall fitness level before deciding to join this trip. You should be able to carry all your required gear (around 25 - 45 lbs, depending on each person's gear choices) and have the ability to acclimate to 8125 ft. 2. Whether there is a waiting list or not, please change your RSVP to no, as soon as possible, if you cannot come. I expect ZERO no-shows, especially since I have to pay in advance for our backpacking permits. If you have a last minute emergency, let me know via email what happened. 3. Group size is set by available camping permits. Only come if you are on the yes list. **By RSVPing yes, you agree to pay, in cash, the $5.00 backpacking permit fee** 4. We will wait 15 min. for you at the carpool site, then take off in our car-pools. Call me if you are running late (916- 266-3328) 5. We hike in as a single group, or split into slower and faster groups. On the return hike, people are free to hike out whenever they wish...no rules, just let someone know. As for me, I usually begin my hike out soon after breakfast, and will gladly carpool with anyone who wishes to join me. Keep this in mind when forming carpools. 6. All food and scented items should be neatly stored. 7. Practice "Leave no trace" camping: no burning of trash (pack it out), no campfires, human waste at least 100 feet away from water, and following all wilderness permit rules. 8. Each person should have all appropriate gear to include: appropriate shelter, sleeping bag, water filter or tablets, eating utensils and cooking gear (if choosing to cook food), headlamp, clothing for potential inclement weather, rudimentary first aid kit, pain relief meds, whistle, and enough food. Don't assume others have necessary gear that they can share. However, backpacking as a group usually stresses community and comaraderie; therefore, if participants wish to get in contact with each other before trip and discuss gear sharing, right on!! 9. Finally, bring a mellow, relaxed attitude. Challenges can arise unexpectedly, and it is hoped that we can end this backpack with fond memories! DIRECTIONS TO TRAILHEAD **Wrights Lake Rd closed, so here is alternate route we MUST take: 1. Hwy 50 east 2. when pass Sly Park Rd. in Pollack Pines, go approximately 8 miles to "ICE HOUSE RESIVOIR-- CRYSTAL BASIN RECREATION AREA" turnoff. Turn left here. 3. Go about 6 miles til Ice House recreation area, and follow signs leading to Wrights Lake (can be a bit tricky, so follow signs). 4. After several (10-15?) miles, will make a left turn on to Wrights Lake Rd 5. Continue final couple of miles to Wrights Lake. 6. Just before Wrights Lake is large parking area is on your right (just before Information Center on left). This is our fallback parking spot, which is .9 miles from actual trailhead. **But we will try to find parking at actual trailhead (for Twin Lakes) so we can cut .9 miles of hiking each way. Therefore, from initial parking lot, take 1st right and cross spillway of Wrights Lake, and continue straight on narrow, slow road til it ends at the smaller parking lot. If lot is filled (frequently), we have option of dropping off a few hikers (with or w/o gear) and driving back to larger parking lot. Please contact me with any questions or concerns, either by e-mail or home phone: 978-9313 Looking forward to a fun trip!

Amble along the Folsom Lake shore over the rocks and into the wood's
Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group
This hike takes us from the school parking lot down to the beautiful sandy west shore of Folsom lake, where we will walk following the lake shore away from the beaten path, this takes through areas of rock scrambling and secluded sandy coves.
We will move at a medium pace until we reach the main boat ramp, at which time we will move inland to return along a walking path which leads us into the woods with a few good hills to get our hearts going. This should average 2 to 2.5 hours. The first part is mostly in the sun with the cooling breeze off the lake the return trip is mostly in the shade.
This weekly hike should be a good exercise and allow beginners to improve their rock scramble ability and confidence. I have to give credit to Susie for suggesting this hike.

Also, consideration should be given to hikers of all abilities on this hike so when car pooling please take this into consideration. This will ensure an enjoyable time for everyone involved. Special Note: After checking out the trailhead for this hike on Sunday people who are planning to do this hike will need high clearance vehicle to drive the last 3.8 miles to our trailhead. Please take this into consideration because if you don't have a high clearance vehicle (or are carpooling with someone who has one) you won't be able to make it to the trailhead. At 10,881 feet, Freel peak is located at the southern end of the Carson Range, which runs north to south along the east side of Lake Tahoe, and is the highest point in the Carson Range, the Lake Tahoe Basin, and El Dorado County. We will hike up to Armstrong Pass from the trailhead, turn right on Tahoe Rim Trail, and continue to the high point on Tahoe Rim Trail. This initial section of the trail is well maintained, has some wildflowers, and offers some spectacular views of Lake Tahoe. Turn right on to State Route 89 and follow the highway for about ten miles. When you get on the other side of Luther Pass (pay close attention to the signs) look for FS (Forest Services Road) 051. Turn left onto FS 051 and follow it to a fork. Turn left at the fork towards Horse Meadow and park at the Armstrong Pass Trailhead. Finally, please note that high winds typically occur during the afternoons at the summit so please consider bringing layers to keep warm as necessary, as well as, the following essential items: - A positive and adventurous attitude - Plenty of water - 3 liters or more - Snacks and a lunch as we will eat and relax on summit before descending - Appropriate clothing (remember to bring a fleece because it can be cold and windy you never know) - Appropriate shoes, Moleskin, Band-Aids, tape, etc. For more information contact Dale Price at (916) 622-6103 or by e-mail @ dep1@surewest.net. Clouds Rest, North Dome Yosemite and You
Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group
Brief: Camping for six, hiking for two days in the Tuolumme Area including Clouds Rest Hike and North Dome. Payment will include Entrance to the park, transportation/gas, campfire wood, use of a propane stove and camping fee. We will camp for the weekend and do these hikes while chilaxin' in Yosemite. Travel on Friday and set up camp. Carb up for an early hike to Clouds rest Saturday. Saturday climb clouds rest and return. Sunday pack up and hike North Dome on the way home. Stopping by a little known swimming hole for the balance of the day before returning to Sacramento. Perhaps even a bonus hike/swim depending on time. Foghorn Book Description of this hike: CLOUDS REST 14.0 mi/8.0 Miles off Tioga Road in Yosemite National Park Hiking to Clouds Rest is a trip that's as epic as climbing Half Dome, but with far less people elbowing you along the way. With a 2,300-foot climb and 14 miles to cover, it's not for those who are out of shape. Then trail ascends steadily for the first four miles, descends steeply for .5 mile, then climbs again more moderately. Keep the faith-the first 2.5 miles from the trailhead are the toughest. The final summit ascent is a little dicey because of the terrifying drop offs, but as with other Yosemite peaks, watch your footing on the granite slabs, and you'll be fine. Overall, the route is much safer than climbing Half Dome, because the final ascent is far more gradual, and there are no cables to maneuver. The view from the top of Clouds Rest of Tenaya Canyon. Half Dome, Yosemite Valley, Tenaya Lake, the Clark Range, and various peaks and ridges-will knock your socks off (hope you brought along an extra pair). Note that if this long hike has made you hot and sweaty, you can stop at the Sunrise Lakes for a swim on the on the way back-the first lake is only .25 mile from the Clouds Rest/Sunrise Trail junction. User Groups: Hikers only. No dogs, horses, or mountain bikes. No wheelchair facilities. Permits: No permits are required. There isl $20 per vehicle entrance fee at Yosemile National Park, good for seven days. Maps: Free park maps are available at park entrance stations or by contacting Yosemite National Park at the address below. NORTH DOME 9.0mi/5.0hrs Tioga Road in Yosemite National Park There are those who say that climbing Half Dome is a bit of a disappointment, and not just because of the crowds. When you reach the top and check out the commanding view, the panorama of granite is not quite as awesome as you might expect, and that's because you can't see Half Domeyou're standing on it. That's a dilemma that's easy to fix. If Half Dome is an absolute necessity in your view of Yosemite, climb North Dome instead, which offers a heart-stopping view of that big piece of granite. The route is not for the faint of heart, but when you are way up high looking down at Tenaya Canyon and across at Half Dome and Clouds Rest well, you'll know why you came. You could hike to North Dome from Yosemite Valley, but it's a long, butt-kicking trip. A much preferred route begins at the Porcupine Creek trailhead on Tioga Road. The dirt access road shortly brings you to a proper trail, signed as Porcupine Creek. Continue straight at two possible junctions near the 2.5-mile mark, heading due south for North Dome. After the third mile, your views begin to open up, providing fine vistas of North Dome and Half Dome and increasing your anticipation. At the trail junction at 4.5 miles, take the left spur for the final hike to North Dome's summit. Surpriseit's a downhill grade to reach it. Hope you brought plenty of film with you; the view from the top is sublime. Half Dome, just across the canyon, appears close enough to touch. Clouds Rest is a dramatic sight to the northeast. To the southwest, you can see cars crawling along the Yosemite Valley floor. On your return trip, consider taking the unsigned spur trail two miles from. North Dome, at an obvious saddle. The spur leads a steep .25 mile to Indian Rock, the only natural arch on land in Yosemite. It's great fun to climb around on. User Groups: Hikers, only. No dogs, horses, or mountain bikes. No wheelchair facilities. Permits: There is a $20 per vehicle entrance fee at Yosemite National Park, good for seven days. Free wilderness permits are required for overnight stays. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis up to one day in advance at the Yosemite Wilderness kiosk near your chosen trailhead or farther in advance by mail, phone, or email for a $5 per person reservation fee.
