Amble along the lake shore over the rocks and into the wood's

Sat, 2010-08-28 15:53

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

This hike takes us from the school parking lot down to the West shore of Folsom lake, where we will walk following the lake shore away from the beaten path, this takes through areas of rock scrambling and secluded sandy coves. We will move at a medium pace until we reach the main boat ramp, at which time we will move inland to the walking path leading into the woods with a few good hills to get our hearts going.

This weekly hike should be a good exercise and allow beginners to improve their rock scramble ability and confidence. I have to give credit to Susie for suggesting this hike.

Coordinator: Brian G 916 276-4809
Difficulty : Beginner-Medium
elevation Gain/loss: 100-150 ft

University Falls - Intermediate - Absolutely Gorgeous Cascading Falls

Sat, 2010-08-28 15:00

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

What: University Falls Swimming and Sunning Location: Quintette, El Dorado County Difficulty: 5.6 round trip. Intermediate with a couple of very steep parts and lots of rocks. Elevation 4100 ft. (-650 ft.) Duration: About 1.5 hours to hike down and about 2 hours to hike out, plus swimming and lunch (2-3 hours). Estimated return time to park and ride: 6pm Dogs: okay Contact: Del Marie (916) 922-8287 Arrange your own carpool and pay the driver $3/hour and share parking fee if any. Try to share ride with those who have the same schedule or hiking ability. Directions: From Hwy 49 turn east onto Hwy 193 at Cool. Drive 14.4 miles to Georgetown. Turn left on Main St. (Wentworth Springs Rd.) and drive 11.8 miles to Quintette. Park on left side of road at yellow gate, just past Harmony Lane. It takes about 1.5 hours to get there from Roseville. Parking is limited, but if you'd like to meet us at the trailhead, we should get there about 9:45am. No cell service. Description: University Falls, aka Pilot Creek Falls, is a wonderful little swimming hole at the small town of Quintette, near Georgetown. The waterfall is a long slide of about 70 ft. in total height, dropping into a number of small pools. The final (and largest) cascade is about 30 ft. high. The swimming holes and water slides are very popular during the summer months with the locals. Be careful though when sliding down these falls: people have been injured before. To reach University Falls, walk down the dirt road, beginning at the gate off Wentworth Springs Rd. At 0.6 miles, turn left at the fork (onto Forest Road 12N67B). At 1.5 miles, at the end of a clear cut area, continue following the road to the right (don't continue straight here). The road continues down hill until you reach a flume. Go right, keeping the flume on your right. At about 2.4 miles, you will see an unsigned but very obvious spur trail on the left heading down to the creek. This little trail goes down to an old campsite, go right here and continue following the trail all the way down to the creek. Then head downstream until you reach the top of the falls. Part of this trail crosses private property, so please be respectful and "leave no trace". The land is partly owned by UC Berkeley (hence the name, University Falls).

Mount Tallac 9.0 miles Strenuous

Fri, 2010-08-27 20:03

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

After hiking all summer, hikers should be in great shape to do the more difficult of the Mt. Tallac trails. The trail climbs 3,500 feet in 4.5 miles to the summit, but in exchange, you get a gorgeous route that passes by Floating Island and Cathedral Lakes on its way to Tallac's spectacular summit. It's 1.7 miles from the trailhead to Floating Island Lake with excellent views of Fallen Leaf Lake and Lake Tahoe. Then it's another .7 mile to a trail junction just before Cathedral Lake, where a trail from Fallen Leaf Lake joins this trail. Cathedral Lake is a good rest stop before making the final ascent to the top of Mount Tallac, a 2.4 mile climb on a rocky trail, made easier by the great views. The trail ends .25 mile below the summit where it meets the other Mt. Tallac trail coming from Gilmore Lake. Bear right and boulder hop your way to the top. The elevation is 9.735 feet and fantastic views. Dogs are permitted. I will be camping at Fallen Leaf Lake so please self organize for carpool and meet at trailhead at 9:30 a.m. My cell phone is 916-320-0180. Directions: Hwy 50 to junction of 50/89 (the Y), continue straight on Hwy 89 continue past Camp Richardson to the signed turnoff for Mount Tallac and Camp Shelley on the left, across the highway from the sign for Baldwin Beach. Turn left and drive one miles to the trailhead. This is a Desolation Wilderness hike with groups limited to 12. Each carpool will be their own group and the driver should sign in for a permit at the trailhead for the group in their car.

Hatchery to Pond Bike Ride

Thu, 2010-08-26 15:46

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

We can meet near the Fish Hatchery off Hazel Avenue. I will be in the parking lot with the meet-up sign on my Black Dodge Caliber. We can ride 10-15 miles at an average "dime" pace (10 mph) heading towards downtown Sacramento. We will stop a few interesting places along the way and allow for folks to catch-up if needed. The trail is entirely paved. The ride should take no more than 2 hours. We will depart at 6:10 pm. Friday is a little less crowded on the trail as the teams have 'practiced' on Tuesday and Thursday. Our scheduled stops include The boat ramp at Sunrise Ave - we will just be warmed up by then. Haggin Park near the 16 mi marker for a rest and possible turn around. Near the top of the Arden Bridge at the park to the right for a restroom break and turn around. For those who want to continue longer we may go as far as Howe - maybe. There are several places to turn around before we reach the pond if the ride seems too long. After some 'too warm' days, Friday is expected to be perfect for biking. Please make sure your bike is in good condition and tires are inflated to the proper pressure. Restrooms and water are located along the AR bike path at regular intervals. Water fountains can be found along the way as well. Please bring a snack, water bottle, sunglasses, wear sunscreen, helmet and a smile

Camping 2 nights Fallen Leaf Lake campground Desolation hikes

Thu, 2010-08-26 06:53

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

Fallen Leaf Lake campground is on the south shore of Lake Tahoe on Hwy 89 just past Camp Richardsom and before the Visitor Center. Pope, Tallac and Baldwin beaches are closeby. I have 3 sites, six people for each site. Sites are on the meadow, should still have some nice full moon lighting as the full moon is the 24th. Fallen Leaf Lake campground is very close to several Desolation Wilderness trailheads. There are showers at this campground. Dogs allowed on leash in campground but can be offleash in wilderness. A bike trail is nearby to ride to the end of Fallen Leaf Lake or to the beaches. NOTE: If you cannot come up until Friday night or Saturday morning, that's fine but the price is the same, $9.00. Saturday I have scheduled the more difficult Mt. Tallac trail to meet at the trailhead at 9:30 a.m. which is about a 5 minute drive from the campground. It will all be awesome and then after we can swim at the beach close to the campground. Sunday we can leave open and decide on a trail in the morning. Its far enough away from south shore to enjoy the beach and wilderness but close enough if you feel like some all night fun. 2 cars are allowed per site but no maximum number of tents as the sites are large. There is an overflow parking area for more cars. Sites are 90, 91, and 92.
