Best Views of Lake Tahoe and You!!! Bring Your Camera and Be Ready for WOW!!!

Tue, 2010-08-24 13:14

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

This hike has been described as one of the best two trails on Lake Tahoe for views and beauty. This will be my first time on this trail. Shannon and some of the others in the group did it twice this year and their reports are that this is a hike that everyone must do if they want to experience the Lake Tahoe at it's best. So, join me and let's see what everyone is raving about. Bring your camera and plan on a relaxed pace because I want to document this trail in photos. Type: ONE WAY shuttle Distance: ~13 miles Time: Most of the day Bring: Water, food, comfortable shoes, moleskin, sunblock, money for dinner Dress in layers Contact: Gary P. 916.224.5535 This is a ONE WAY hike which means that in the morning we all meet at the END of the trail first and then shuttle to the beginning. The "ending" trailhead is near Ponderosa Ranch just beyond Incline Village. Meet here around 9:45 AM and park along the road. We will cram the cars full, and shuttle to the Spooner Lake parking area ($6 per car). After the hike we will take the drivers of the trailhead cars back to their cars. It's about a 20 minute drive. The Flume Trail is is primarily a BIKE trail with narrow, steep drop offs. Dogs are not recommended because they can be hazardous to bikers. Kayaking - Monterey Bay from Santa Cruz Harbor

Mon, 2010-08-23 15:51

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

We’ll meet at Kayak Connection at the Santa Cruz Boat Harbor, and head to the boat ramp from there. There is an hourly fee for parking, and there might be a fee to launch a kayak at the ramp. After doing a brief tour of the harbor, we’ll head out around the jetty and paddle toward the kelp forest near Lighthouse point where we’ll carefully paddle among sea otters and harbor seals. Then we’ll check out the sea lions on Seal Rock and keep an eye out for whales and dolphins should they happen to swim past the point. Eventually we’ll turn around, passing Steamer Lane, the Santa Cruz Wharf, the beach, and the boardwalk on our way back to the harbor and our take-out. Distance: 5 – 6 miles Time on Water: 4 – 5 hours High Tide: 11:34 – 5.5 ft. Low Tide: 17:46 – 0.3ft. Minimum Equipment: Kayak, paddle, PFD, whistle. All boats must have flotation - foam bulkheads or flotation bags for sit-insides; stuff as many pool noodles into a sit-on-top as it will hold (mine holds seven large ones). Minimum Skill Level: You must be able to describe the self-rescue procedure for your boat and have onboard the equipment necessary to perform it. Paddlers who come ill-equipped or unprepared for this trip will be left in the harbor. Bring a good shade hat, sunscreen, drinking water, snacks and/or lunch, and a buoyant outlook! Sun, 2010-08-22 20:12

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

After meeting up at Sun splash and those who wish to car pool get together we will start out for Forest Hill where we will meet at the Forest Hill Ranger Station and then Follow each other along Mosquito Ridge Road until it turns into French Meadows road which ends at French meadows about 1.5 hours. It is a very beautiful drive to start our day of hiking into one of the most beautiful Valleys of the Granite Chief Wilderness area. This 10 mile strenuous hike starts out along the middle fork of the American river then moves to a being edged by a small creek which flows into Mildred Lakes and will reward those interested with amazing views and a small waterfall near the end. This Valley contains ancient pictographs for those who know how to find them. We will lunch at the far end of the trail, and begin our return journey along this amazing trail. This will probably be about 5 hours of hiking in the wideness area. Altitude 6000-7500 about 1500 feet of gain over the first 2 miles.

BACKPACK--overnight near Lake Tahoe

Sun, 2010-08-22 17:10

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

Boss just informed me that I have Thurs and Fri off! So....anyone interested in a single night overnight backpack? I am interested in either: --the western side of Desolation Wilderness (Smith or Lyons Lake---about 1 hr 20 min from Folsom Park n Ride) or -- Dardanelles Lake just south of Lake Tahoe (about 1 hr 30 min from Folsom Park N Ride) ***Together, we can decide on which destination is preferable. Either way, this will be an easy overnighter, with no more than 3 hours of hiking each way. Due to our relatively late start Thurs, on Friday morning, I plan on lounging about our lake and will be in no particular rush to get back to town early. (Maybe depart around 10 -11 am----who knows?) If interested, respond to my e-mail directly or call me at my home phone of 978-9313 Here's hoping I don't do a solo trip! Chow, Allan

TRT In Fourteen Days Part 14 Echo Lakes to Emerald Bay 20

Sat, 2010-08-21 04:08

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

If you've ever set you sites on accomplishing one of the greatest hiking experiences this is one you definitely have to sign up for and complete. This is one of a fourteen part series of hikes circumnavigating Lake Tahoe. Know commonly as the Tahoe Rim Trail. We will begin with the shorter sections and continue onto the longer ones as summer arrives and our conditioning improves. In order to qualify for the 165 Miler TRTA patch you will need to become a member of the TRTA. It will cost you $35 USD. The link is: https://www.tahoerimt... I thought it might be helpful to let you know what level of conditioning is expected for this trip. No one wants to be the person that holds up the entire group so if you can out hike me no worries. For those of you who haven't hiked with me here's what condition you should be in to sign up for his hike. You should be able to climb 2000' in an hour over 2 miles. If you don't know if you can do this you can try the training hill in Auburn it's 1000' in one mile. Please don't sign up if your not in this level of conditioning. I reserve the right to bump anyone who I feel does not meet these requirements. Please don't take it personal, get out there and train. Most anyone can get themselves to this level in 90 days. ===== PLEASE COPY AND BRING THE FOLLOWING MAPS ===== Trailhead: TRT Trailhead Echo Lakes to Emerald Bay Trail Map: Echo Lakes to Emerald Bay Map Elevation Map: Echo Lake to Emerald Bay Elevation Map Trail Use This section is open to hikers, bikers and equestrians. * Water - Water is generally available from Watson Lake and Creek, and seasonally available from small seeps between Watson Lake and Brockway. All water found on the trail must be treated before drinking. * Caution – Be prepared for sudden weather changes, strong winds, and high altitudes. Please carry a map, as many unmarked trails and fire roads cross the TRT. * Signage - The trail is marked at intervals with light blue, triangular TRT logo signs * Leave-No-Trace—The TRTA supports and encourages LNT practices while on the trail. (see map for details). * Camping – is allowed within 300’ of the trail and 200’ away from a water source. At Watson Lake camp only in designated sites marked by a numbered post and a metal campfire ring with a hinged grill. * Fire – Fire danger can be extreme, and fires, camp stoves, and smoking may be prohibited. Bear River Bridge Nevada County, California

Wed, 2010-08-18 20:08

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

The Bear River forms the southern most border of Nevada County. At the crossing of Bear River and Hwy 174 is a historic bridge, and there is also a great trail for hiking there. It is a relatively easy, approximately two mile hike downstream. There are several smaller trails branching off to the river for swimming, fishing, or just relaxing. There is plenty of free parking. Gary tells me this is a great swimming hole.
