Clouds Rest in the Heart of Yosemite National Forest
Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group
I'm back and would like to share this with the rest of you. If you ever thought about taking a day hike to Clouds Rest this is the perfect opportunity. We will leave early Sunday morning and come home Sunday night and still have Monday to recoup as it is a Holiday. You can also find a place to stay to spend the night if you like but make sure your car group are all on the same page. Hiking to Clouds Rest is a trip that is more spectacular than climbing Half Dome, but with far less people elbowing you along the way. With a 1,900-foot climb, give or take a little and 14 miles round trip, it's not for those who are out of shape but is much easier than Half Dome. I went up with a 50 pound back pack in June starting at Toulumne Meadows. We will start this one at Tenaya Lake Sunrise Trailhead. The trail ascends steadily for the first four miles, descends steeply for .5 mile, then climbs again more moderately. Keep the faith-the first 2.5 miles from the trailhead are the toughest. The final summit ascent is a little dicey because of the terrifying but spectacular drop offs, but as with other Yosemite peaks, watch your footing on the granite slabs, and you'll be fine. Overall, the route is much safer than climbing Half Dome, because the final ascent is far more gradual, and there are no cables to maneuver. The views from the top of Clouds Rest of Tenaya Canyon, Half Dome, Yosemite Valley, Tenaya Lake, the Clark Range, Merced Lake, Cathedral Peak and Mountain Range and various peaks and ridges will put you in AWE!!! We will have lunch on top of Clouds Rest where you will see 360 degrees around you and realize how small Yosemite Valley really is in comparison to the Yosemite National Forest. If on the way back we decide to take a swim (time permitting) we can take a right at the Sunrise Lake junction for about .5 miles to the first lake and take a dip. I swam here in June with snow still on the ground. BRRRRR!!! I had a friend take a picture of me diving in but he missed the shot so I had to go in again. This would make a total of about 15 miles. Things to bring; Good additude Smile Camera - You'll be amazed and want to try and capture it. Good non slip hiking shoes/boots Plenty of water for 14 miles Lunch and snacks May stop and get breakfast on the way. Quickie Breakfast Watch the weather for protective gear. You never know in the highlands. Sun Block Wind Breaker Swim suit for the hike home. $3.00 per person per hour of driving time. Figure 3.5 hrs each way. Share expence of park enterence fee equally. $20.00 total. A little more cash for stopping for dinner on the way home if you car groups chooses. User Groups: Hikers only. No dogs, horses, or mountain bikes. No wheelchair facilities. Permits: No permits are required. There is a $20 per vehicle entrance fee at Yosemite National Park, good for seven days or you can purchase an annual pass if you plan on returning. Maps: Free park maps are available at park entrance stations or by contacting Yosemite National Park at the address below. I use a topographic map by Tom Harrison Maps titled Yosemite High Country, ask the USGSM for Tenaya Lake or purchase one at your favorite outdoor recreation store (REI) if you like but no need to unless you are going to use it again. Directions: From Sunrise Park and Ride go south to CA-16 turn left; go 21.54 mi to (CA 49), turn right for 47.41 miles to Rawhide Rd (CR-E5) turn right go 4.02 miles to (CA 108) turn right for 3.15 miles; turn left on Montezuma Rd (CA 49) go 3.42 miles; turn right on (CA 120) go 9.19 miles; turn right on Old Priest Grade. This is steep. You can go straight to bypass it but it will add about 10 minutes. Turn right on (CA-120) go 34.78 miles; turn left on Tioga Pass Rd still (CA-120) and go about 30.3 miles to Tenaya Lake - Sunrise Lakes Trailhead on the south side of Tioga Road just west of Tenaya Lake. Contact: Yosemite National Park Public Information Office, P.O. Box 577, Yosemite National Park, CA 95389, 209/372-0200, website; www.nps.gov/yose. I will have maps at the meetup spot.

Evening Adventure Hike through the Woods and across the River
Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group
Distance: ~ 7 miles. Duration: ~ 2.5 hours Difficulty: Intermediate (hike is relatively easy, but very fast-paced; the terrain can be rocky and stickery!) Dogs: Dogs on Leash Allowed Regarding RSVPs: I don't need to know if you're NOT coming, and I ignore Maybe responses. We just leave with whomever shows up by 6:10! Bring a flashlight or headlamp. Wear sturdy shoes (we walk on riverbeds and through brush). Bring plenty of water if the weather is warm, and don't forget bug repellent! This hike tends to move at a brisk pace. If you are looking for a completely relaxed and easy hike, then you will likely be disappointed. I can point out alternate routes for those who would like a more leisurely walk. Meet inside Hagan Community Park (not the Community Center). There is no entrance fee after 5:45. (Sometimes there is still an attendant at the gate, but she typically lets people through without a problem after 5:30.) Follow the driveway to the end, turn right, keep following straight (past other parking lots) until it dead-ends at a small barn with parking. The gates won't be closed until nearly 10PM. We meet at 6pm, and leave by 6:10. We won't wait for maybes! (If you are running late, you can call Susan at 408.691.7782.) Starting at Hagan Community Park, we generally follow a figure 8 loop trail that traverses the River Bend (formerly Goethe) Park woods along the river, crosses the bike bridge to William Pond Park in Carmichael where it will do a loop around the pond (water permitting) and then return across the bridge then through an alternate route back to the starting point. Directions From 50 East-bound: 1. On 50, take exit 15 toward Rancho Cordova and turn left (North) at Mather Field Rd. 2. Turn right at Folsom Blvd. 3. Turn left at Coloma Rd. 4. Turn left onto Chase Dr. (just before the High School - there is also a sign for Hagan Community Park). 5. Go straight to the end of Chase Drive and go straight into the park past the gatehouse (unattended), once inside the park, go straight until you need to take a sharp right and drive to the end of the parking area and park to the left nearest the pond - you should see a little red barn right next to where we park.. Directions from Roseville: 1. Take Sunrise South to Coloma Rd. (which allows you to bypass some of the traffic) 2. Take a right on Coloma Rd. and take it until Chase Dr. (if you get to Folsom Blvd, you went a bit over a block too far) 3. 2nd Saturday Art Hike!
Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group
Yes, I know you'll be tired from your big hike, but just hurry home and consider this a way to stretch out your muscles as well as your imagination! I'll lead you to some of my favorite midtown art hang-outs; many have snacks, music and wine. Expect crowds, especially later in the evening at the galleries near J. Okay to bring older kids, but sometimes the art content is on the wild side, and so is the crowd on the street! 3.36 mile loop, not counting the walks through the galleries themselves. We will leave the trailhead at 6:10pm sharp, because most venues close at 10, and it takes time to see the art in addition to getting to it. Click on the map to enlarge and print it out to bring, in addition to a small flashlight to read it with, some cash for a late dinner or snack, comfortable walking shoes and an adventurous spirit. The times I've suggested on the map are loose. It is easy to lose people in the crowds, and we all like to view art at our own pace, so plan to walk with a couple other people and keep track of them at each venue, (meeting outside before moving on helps, and exchanging cell phone numbers is a good idea) but we won't be trying to keep our entire group together. If you get separated, use the map to get to the next venue or to skip one and try to meet at the following. I hope to grab a late dinner at Ma Jong's and rest before heading back to the cars.
