Water Slides North? Curtain Falls

Thu, 2010-08-12 20:17

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

CURTAIN FALLS Plumas National Forest, off Highway 70 near Oroville Access: Hike and scramble 5.0 miles round-trip Elevation: Start at 2,800 feet; total loss 2,000 feet Level: Strenuous Best Season: May-August Contact: Gary P. 916.224.5535 We'll leave early and try to get to the trail before the heat of the day. Travel down to the river cross and go up to the falls. Spend several hours until the heat of the day has passed and return. Pack plenty of water a lunch swimming gear and wading shoes, sun screen and sun protective clothing. I will bring a tube and rope to float you across the river. This hike is an exploratory hike as I have not done this trail before. If your not up for a possible adventure then this may not be the hike for you. The following was copied from the Foghorn Book on Waterfalls page 106, they rated it a "9": If you've hiked the well-maintained national recreation trail to Feather Falls, scrambled your way down steep slopes to Seven Falls, and still haven't had your fill of waterfalls in the Feather Falls Scenic Area, well. . . you have one more trip to take. And unless you're an ace kayaker willing to make the run down the Middle Fork of the Feather River, you have a long hike and an interesting river trek ahead of you. The first time I tried to reach Curtain Falls, I was told by the Forest Service that the best way to get there was to rent a boat, motor it up the Middle Fork Feather river arm as far as possible, then tie it up and hike along the riverbank to the falls. What they didn't tell me is that the bank is steep granite—sometimes vertical granite—and that hiking it is treacherous and nearly impossible. After that attempt, I got in touch with Dee Randolph, who runs Dee-Tours in the Feather Falls Scenic Area. Randolph said he never heard of anyone getting to Curtain Falls that way, and added that the 40-foot fall is best seen by kayaking in high water. But Randolph takes groups on foot to Curtain Falls every summer. He does it by leading them on a two-mile hike on the Dome Trail, descending 2,000 feet to the river canyon. It's a steep trek. It's also a scenic trek, skirting under 3,200-foot Bald Rock Dome. From the trailhead, you begin walking on an old skid trail that barrels down the ridge. In about 200 yards, it leads to the actual start of the Dome Trail, which cuts off to your left. Then you simply follow the main trail, with no junctions or intersections to bother with, for two miles downhill. Views of both the river canyon below and the granite of Bald Rock Dome above are spectacular the whole way. In the spring, buckeye trees are in full bloom; their sweet scent wafts along the path with you. The second mile of the Dome Trail is for those who are unafraid of heights. The Forest Service blasted the trail out of the canyon's granite wall, then installed railings to keep people from falling off the edge, In one section, where blasting was impossible, the trail makers built a steep, 75-foot-taIl staircase and bolted it into the rock to bridge the trail. Where the Dome Trail ends at the river's edge, you're still .5 mile downstream from Curtain Falls. Some people try to walk from here, but the granite walls are sheer, and footing is dicey. Accidents are reported every year. Instead, it's better to wade or swim, but the river current is strong even in late season. Randolph gets his tour clients across the river by supplying each of them with an inner tube, hooking the tubes to a rope, and letting the current carry them safely across. On the far side, a rough route leads up-canyon, via some rock scrambling and inner-tubing down granite waterslides. It's great fun, but you must be prepared to get wet. A half-mile of this partly-by-land, partly-by-water trekking brings you to the pool in front of Curtain Falls. At 40 feet high and at least 100 feet wide, Curtain is a formidable river fall. Top-notch kayakers make the run over its lip in springtime, but they are the brave and the few. It's not for everybody. Curtain's pool is almost as impressive as the fall itself, with a depth of at least 50 feet and an intense aquamarine hue. Some people have tried scuba diving in the crystalline pool, but alas, no secret treasures have been found. Randolph believes the waterfall is called Curtain Falls because its cliff is divided by a rock tongue. During heavy rain, when the river level rises, the tongue disappears and the curtains of water seem to close. Then when the rain stops and the river level drops, the tongue re-emerges and divides Curtain Falls' flow, giving the appearance of curtains opening. A dynamited staircase on the fall's right side, probably left from ambitious miners in the late 1800s, runs up and over Curtain Falls. Ledges above the falls make perfect jumping platforms. While the sun is high, you can hang out and swim here in your own private paradise. Just be sure to save some energy for the return trip. It's easy to forget that after scrambling back downstream to the end of the Dome Trail, you have a two-mile hike and a 2,000-foot elevation gain ahead of you. Most important of all: Save some water for this part of the hike. It's completely exposed, and can be hot and dry in the afternoon. Information and Contact There is no fee. For a map of Plumas National Forest, contact the office below or visit website www.fs.fed.us/r5/maps/. For more information, contact Plumas National Forest, Feather River Ranger District, 875 Mitchell Avenue, Oroville, CA 95965, 530/534-6500, website: www.fs .fed.us/r5/plumas. Or phone Dee Randolph at DeeTours in Berry Creek, 530/589-2750. Directions From Highway 70 in Oroville, take the Oroville Dam Boulevard exit (Highway 162) east and drive 1.6 miles to Olive Highway/Highway 162. Turn right and drive 17 miles on Highway 162 to Bald Rock Road on the right. (This is the western end of Bald Rock Road.) Turn right and drive five miles, then turn left on Zink Road. Drive three more miles until you reach a four-way intersection; continue straight across on Forest Service Road 21N51Y. Drive three miles to a fork in the road; take the left spur. In a few hundred feet, take the left spur to the Dome Trail Trailhead. This hike is an exploratory hike as I have not done this trail before. If your not up for a possible adventure then this may not be the hike for you.

Wear sturdy shoes (we walk on riverbeds and through brush). Bring plenty of water if the weather is warm, and don't forget bug repellent! This hike tends to move at a brisk pace. Meet inside Hagan Community Park (not the Community Center). There is no entrance fee after 5:45. (Sometimes there is still an attendant at the gate, but she typically lets people through without a problem after 5:30.) Follow the driveway to the end, turn right, keep following straight (past other parking lots) until it dead-ends at a small barn with parking. The gates won't be closed until nearly 10PM. We meet at 6pm, and leave by 6:10. We won't wait for maybes! (If you are running late, you can call Susan at 408.691.7782.) Starting at Hagan Community Park, we generally follow a figure 8 loop trail that traverses the River Bend (formerly Goethe) Park woods along the river, crosses the bike bridge to William Pond Park in Carmichael where it will do a loop around the pond (water permitting) and then return across the bridge then through an alternate route back to the starting point. Directions From 50 East-bound: 1. On 50, take exit 15 toward Rancho Cordova and turn left (North) at Mather Field Rd. 2. Turn right at Folsom Blvd. 3. Turn left at Coloma Rd. 4. Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

Malakoff Diggins State Park Information Cost: $8 per car to park, plus carpool money at $10-12 per person We'll do two trails: 1) The Humbug Trail which descends 2.5 miles along Humbug Creek to the Yuba River overlook, and 2) "The Tunnel" which is a pitch dark quarter mile drainage tunnel that runs about a foot deep in cold water (flashlight necessary and old or water shoes recommended). The two of them together equal ~5.5 miles intermediate. There are also two other trails available. One goes around the inside of the mining pit, and the other follows the rim above the mining pit. These could be done either as easier options to the Humbug Trail, or in addition to the above trails. Estimated arrival time to the bathrooms near the museum is 10 AM. Hang out near the museum until everyone arrives. Shannon B. (916) 224-9885 Directions From Roseville I-80 to Auburn Exit Hwy 49 Left onto Hwy 49 north, continue to Nevada City LEFT to follow Hwy 49 north toward Downieville (watch the signs...don't miss this turn!) Emigrant Lake

Thu, 2010-08-05 21:09

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

Length: Approximately 8 miles round trip (4-6 hours hiking time) Elevation Gain: Approximately 900 feet starting at 7,800 feet climbing to 8,700 feet elevation Difficulty: Moderate due to elevation but an easy pace. Meet up time: I plan to meet at 8:00 AM and leave 8:15 AM. I decided to limit this outing to 18 hikers. If more than 12 show up, we will have to split up into two groups to comply with US laws and regulations and to avoid any fines which would be a most unwelcome distraction. I apologize in advance for any inconvenience this may cause. Please bring with you: BUG REPELLANT, Hat, Water (2 liters minimum-this in the middle of summer, Sun Protection, Lunch, Map & Compass, Layered Clothing, Whistle, Flashlight, First Aid Kit (w/Moleskin), Pocket Knife, and money for drivers and optional dinner. The drive is estimated 3.5 to 4 hours round trip or $11.00 to $12.00 per rider is suggested. We will travel along the South shore of Caples Lake through small flower filled meadows and mixed pine and fir forest for the first two miles and then climb 800 feet in the last two miles to the deep glacier formed Emigrant Lake where tall mountain peaks tower above us with excellent view of the backside of the Three Sisters if you are willing to climb a little. There should be summer wildflowers to cheer us on and keep our spirits warm. I keep an easy pace and will stop occasionally to satisfy my shutterbug craving and take some photos. All hiking levels and shutterbugs are welcome. For those who wish to drive Directly to the trailhead we will be arriving around 10:00 or 10:15 AM at Caples Lake on Hwy 88. Please note in the comments section next to your name if you will be meeting us at the trail head. 1. From Iron Point Park & Ride go east on U.S. 50 to Sly Park Road (2nd Pollock Pines exit) (Approx 35.0 miles.) 2. Make a right to go southbound on Sly Park Road. (Approx. 4.6 miles) 3. Turn left (eastbound) on Mormon Emigrant Trail (a hard to find turn with only a small green street sign, but there is a country store called "Slypark Resort" on the right just before the turn. (Note: If you miss this critical left turn "you're toast" because you'll be lost forever!!!) 4. After successfully turning onto Mormon Emigrant Trail, go eastbound for approximately 35 miles until hitting Hwy 88. (Approx. 24.6 miles.) 5. Turn Left (eastbound) on Hwy 88. Go Past Kirkwood. Turn right onto a parking lot at Caples Lake. If you have gone to Carson Pass at the top of the grade you have gone too far. (Approx. 12.6 miles.) For carpoolers, I suggest paying your drivers $3.00 per each hour driving time (Driving time is about 3.75 hours round trip). See you all there!

Mt. Shasta B&B & Hiking

Thu, 2010-08-05 09:19

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

*Please read entire notice before RSVPing* Join me and another hiker for a two-night (Wed & Thurs, Sept 8 and 9) trip to Mt. Shasta. We’ll stay at a B&B in the quaint city that is the mountain's namesake, which serves as a perfect jumping off point for many great hiking trails in the area. The B&B’s location also allows you to explore the small town of Mt. Shasta on foot. The timing might afford some early fall color. Hiking will be light to moderate, generally 6-7 miles a day with less than 1,000’ elevation gain. At present I have one reserved room left to be filled. It has a king sized bed and double sofa bed, along with a private bath, for $120 a night. The room could work for one person who wants some space or up to four “close” friends who don’t mind being a bit cramped. Given the flexible nature of the number people the room could serve, the event may fill before it reaches four participants - first come, first served. Be sure to indicate how many (if any) guests you have. I will let you know if you sign up after the room is taken. Please, only those who can make a firm commitment to these days should sign up. There will be a planning meeting prior to the trip to firm up details and select the trails the group is most interested in hiking.

Monday Night Skate

Wed, 2010-08-04 11:54

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

From: http://www.sacramento... : Why skate? Skating is fun and healthy. It is a fun, low-impact aerobic sport. It uses 570 calories an hour while bringing back your childhood. Background: Started by Mari Tonin around 1993, the Monday Night Skate has been lots of fun and exercise for lots of people. The free Monday Night Skate is the largest recreational skate in Sacramento. The group meets at the parking lot at 3rd and S Streets in downtown Sacramento at 7:00 p.m. It then leaves on a 6 to 12 mile skate. For variety, the route of the skate changes from Monday to Monday. Skating with a group is a great way to learn skating. You'll be able to skate much better than you ever could alone. Required skills: Able to skate for a few miles at a moderate speed. Skating lessons are available. Able to stop, If you come to the Monday Night Skate before 7:00 p.m., you can usually get a free stopping lesson. Suggested equipment: Wrist guards. The most frequent injury skaters receive is a broken or sprained wrist. Helmet. If you fall on your head, this could save you from becoming a vegetable. Knee pads. Can prevent a lot of pain and skin rash. Elbow pads. Falling properly to avoid injury requires elbow pads. Falling on a bare elbow can be very painful. When skating is done in the dark: Battery powered lights. Flashing red lights increase visibility. A flashlight or other white light can help you see where your are skating. Also nice: A bottle or canteen of water. For more information: Go directly to "Sacramento Skating": http://www.sacramento... Or call Brian Malone at 916-715-2808, or call Bernard Scoville at 916-447-8288.

Weimar Institute Trails - Intermediate ~ 7 miles

Wed, 2010-08-04 11:08

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

The trails are in a beautiful wooded area just past Auburn inside the Weimar Instute. It's no more than 1000' elevation gain and there are definitely some ups and downs. It's on the easier side of intermediate. Weimar Institute Trail Map I will bring trail maps with a suggested route highlighted. Bring your GPS if you want an exact mileage. It will probably be ~7 miles. Hike as much as you choose. The trails connect, so if you get tired you can always find your way back to a meeting spot and wait for your car group. My plan is to skirt the outside edges, definitely not all 14 miles of the available trails. Dogs okay, but please clean up after. Estimated time to the Weimar Institute parking area is 11:00am. Directions from Sacramento: Take I-80 E. Take the exit towards WEST PAOLI LANE. Turn left at end of ramp Turn left over bridge Turn right into Weimar Center Physical address: Weimar Academy 20601 West Paoli Lane Weimar, CA 95736 Please pay your carpool driver ~$3 per hour of drive time, so approximately $5 total.

Feather Falls National Scenic Trail

Wed, 2010-08-04 09:22

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

Intermediate hike 8-9 miles round trip 1100 feet total elevation gain Bad weather cancels It's a tradition - Feather Falls on New Year's Day! Start the New Year off hiking. Bring food to share for potluck lunch on the viewing platform. Mention what you're bringing in your RSVP so we get a variety of stuff. Notes from last year's hike: Feather Falls is the sixth highest waterfall in the United States. From 100 Classic Hikes in Northern California: "This hike offers a smorgasbord of natural delights. You'll walk through tall stands of incense cedar and ponderosa pine, along streams shaded by bigleaf maple and dogwood to Feather Falls, where the clear waters of Fall River drop 640 feet into a granitic gorge." It's not a bad hike if you're used to it, but can be strenuous for beginners. The way in isn't too bad, but the way out can do a real number on the knees. I'm not trying to scare you off, you just need to know what you're in for. Be sure to bring your camera, and of course a tripod if you want some neat motion shots of the falls. Check out Localhikes for topo map, elevation profile, & pictures. Directions: Drive East on I-80 and exit Hwy 65 North towards Marysville, Take Hwy 65 N until it joins Hwy 70 North just before "downtown" (if there is such a thing)Olivehurst. From there just follow Hwy 70 North into Oroville. From Oroville, drive east on Hwy 162 (Oroville Dam Blvd) about 8 mi to Forbestown Rd. Turn right (east) to Lumpkin Rd. Turn left on Lumpkin Rd and drive 10.5 mi to the sign for Feather Falls Trail. Turn left and drive 1.5 to parking area. Carpoolers please remember to pay your driver $3 per hour of drive time per passenger. Link to PDF and map: http://www.fs.fed.us/... We'll hike in on the longer (more moderate) trail, and out on the shorter one. After lunch we can hike up to the top of the falls for spectacular views. Very wet or wintry weather will have to cancel this one, but we'll find something else to do!
