Full Moon Snowshoe to Peter Grub Hut (Not an overnight trip)

Tue, 2010-07-27 05:58

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

Last year I was asked to do a full moon snowshoe trip. Here it is!!! The description below is copied from the day hike. Please adjust your gear to a night hike/snowshoe trip. The easy access and short distance to Peter Grubb Hut make this trip extremely popular with skiers and snowshoers alike. Chances are, due to the popularity of this trip, you will be able to follow a packed trail all the way into Round Valley. Staying overnight at the hut provides a comfortable way to explore some of the back country to the north, ensuring a degree of solitude that will almost certainly be lacking on the trip to the hut. On clear days you have excellent views of Castle Peak and the Donner Summit area from Castle Pass. How to Get There Just west of Donner Summit take the Castle Peak exit from Interstate 80. Follow signs to the Sno-Park at the east end of the frontage road immediately south of the freeway. To reach the trailhead you must walk back under the freeway to the north side of the westbound off-ramp. Description After walking under the freeway to the westbound off-ramp, begin your hike by following a snow-covered road that climbs above the ramp. Quickly the road turns northwest into mixed forest, where a pair of signs direct snowmobiles to the left and self-powered travelers to the right. Soon the route along the road leads to the open meadow of Castle Valley. Excellent views of the west face of Castle Peak appear as you pass slightly above and west of the valley bottom on a mild grade. Unless your trip happens to occur in the middle of a snowstorm, you should be able to follow the tracks of previous snowshoe or ski parties, due to the high popularity of this trip. Otherwise, periodically placed blue markers will help guide you. Leaving the meadow behind, you continue to ascend mildly up the valley through light-to-moderate forest cover. Near the head of the canyon the grade increases. At two and a quarter miles from the trailhead you stand on top of Castle Pass, where an excellent vista appears of the peaks and ski areas of the Donner Summit region. The ramparts of Castle Peak loom directly above, while the ski runs of Northstar, Boreal Ridge, and Sugar Bowl are clearly seen carpeting the nearby hills. Avoid the tendency to immediately descend from the pass, which leads to the snowmobile area. Instead, continue along the ridge northeast toward Castle Peak, following some old orange triangular signs marked SIERRA SKI WAY, CASTLE PEAK-NORDEN. Eventually the route leaves the ridge and makes a mild descent through light forest for a half mile to the edge of the hill overlooking beautiful Round Valley. Now descend more steeply to the edge of the valley and work your way over to Peter Grubb Hut. The hut is a pleasant destination for a half-day outing, or a fine base camp for further explorations into the lonely territory to the north. The gentle, open slopes of Round Valley provide the perfect environment for skiers practicing their kick-and-glide technique. Retrace your steps back to the trailhead. Evening Adventure Hike through the Woods and across the River

Mon, 2010-07-26 22:40

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

Distance: ~ 7 miles.
Duration: ~ 2.5 hours
Difficulty: Intermediate (hike is relatively easy, but very fast-paced; the terrain can be rocky and stickery!)
Dogs: Dogs on Leash Allowed
Regarding RSVPs: I don't need to know if you're NOT coming, and I ignore Maybe responses. We just leave with whomever shows up by 6:10!

Bring a flashlight or headlamp. Wear sturdy shoes (we walk on riverbeds and through brush). Bring plenty of water if the weather is warm, and don't forget bug repellent! This hike tends to move at a brisk pace. If you are looking for a completely relaxed and easy hike, then you will likely be disappointed. I can point out alternate routes for those who would like a more leisurely walk.

Meet inside Hagan Community Park (not the Community Center). There is no entrance fee after 5:45. (Sometimes there is still an attendant at the gate, but she typically lets people through without a problem after 5:30.) Follow the driveway to the end, turn right, keep following straight (past other parking lots) until it dead-ends at a small barn with parking. The gates won't be closed until nearly 10PM.

We meet at 6pm, and leave by 6:10. We won't wait for maybes! (If you are running late, you can call Susan at 408.691.7782.) Starting at Hagan Community Park, we generally follow a figure 8 loop trail that traverses the River Bend (formerly Goethe) Park woods along the river, crosses the bike bridge to William Pond Park in Carmichael where it will do a loop around the pond (water permitting) and then return across the bridge then through an alternate route back to the starting point.

Directions From 50 East-bound:
1. On 50, take exit 15 toward Rancho Cordova and turn left (North) at Mather Field Rd.
2. Turn right at Folsom Blvd.
3. Turn left at Coloma Rd.
4. Turn left onto Chase Dr. (just before the High School - there is also a sign for Hagan Community Park).
5. Go straight to the end of Chase Drive and go straight into the park past the gatehouse (unattended), once inside the park, go straight until you need to take a sharp right and drive to the end of the parking area and park to the left nearest the pond - you should see a little red barn right next to where we park..

Directions from Roseville:
1. Take Sunrise South to Coloma Rd. (which allows you to bypass some of the traffic)
2. Take a right on Coloma Rd. and take it until Chase Dr. (if you get to Folsom Blvd, you went a bit over a block too far)
3. Turn right onto Chase Dr. (just after the High School - there is also a sign for Hagan Community Park).
4. Go straight to the end of Chase Drive and go straight into the park past the gatehouse (unattended), once inside the park, go straight until you need to take a sharp right and drive to the end of the parking area and park to the left nearest the pond - you should see a little red barn right next to where we park..

Facilities: There are public restrooms and drinking fountains at Hagan Community Park, River Bend Park, as well as William Pond Park.

Santa Cruz Ocean Front Hike with Camping one night

Mon, 2010-07-26 17:03

Sacramento Trail Mix Hiking & Adventure Group

We will be going to Santa Cruz to hike the water front from the Natural Bridges State Beach through Lighthouse Field State Beach to the Santa Cruz pier. We will then spend time on the beach and in the sun and surf. We will try to arrange a dinner Sunday night for everyone before those headed home leave. For those who want to avoid that Sunday night drive camping will be available at Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, 2591 Graham Hill Road Scotts Valley, CA 95060 about a 15 minute drive from the beach. This is an enjoyable walk mostly along the ocean front walk and a lot of fun with plenty to see and experience. Wear layered clothing as the mornings can be chilly, and the afternoons warm. Camera are a must... There is absolutely no alcohol allowed in the park when camping. Camping is $35 for the night but we can have up to 8 people and 8 tents per site so the actual cost would be about $5-$15 each depending upon number willing to stay . With A hike Through the park the next day. Contact: Brian G (916) 276-4809. You will be notified 2 days prior to the trip regarding the final cost. We will arrive at the Natural Bridges State Beach at 10am approx, from there we will start by exploring the beach at the park, and the tide pools then hike along the ocean front with frequent jaunts to the cliff for those interested, the final mile will be in the surf, beginning with the decent to the cliff base with an excursion through waves be prepared to get wet, those not interested may bypass this with a diversion through town. Finally we will arrive at the to the Santa Cruz pier a distance of about 4 miles. So the total distance for the day will be around 8 miles. Everyone will return together after dinner to the cars and head over to the Camping site or home.

For those of you who haven't hiked with me here's what condition you should be in to sign up for his hike. You should be able to climb 2000' in an hour over 2 miles. Evening Adventure Hike through the Woods and across the River

Mon, 2010-07-26 14:37

SacramentoTrailMix.com
