5 stars Great detail and ease of use 2010-07-16

I like the way this book it set up. The title gives you the information on what it's about; pretty straight forward. But it is superior... I bought another hiking book at the same time and it's nice but I wish it was set up like this one. I like the way every hike has easy to see/find elevation changes and difficulty levels. It's just enough information and not too much. Each hike has good driving directions and a good description. And most, if not all, has a picture or pictures.

5 stars Very Good Hiking Guide 2009-08-02

I recently used this book, together with "Best Coast Hikes of Northern California" by Marc Soares and "California Hiking" by Stienstra and Brown, as a guide for a series of day hikes out of Santa Cruz. I found this book the most useful of the three (although all were good). It is thin enough that you can actually take it with you on the hike, and the hikes were all well chosen and described. One of the best feature was the small topo map included with each hike--not a replacement for a real USGS map if you are taking a long trip, but perfect for a 3-6 hour day hike. My only complaint is that author chose cutsie names for the trails, which made it sometimes hard to relate them to descriptions in other books, on park maps/brochures, etc
